| AOL Presents: Daisy Fuentes - 11 December 1998 |
We're delighted to be joined by Daisy Fuentes this evening!
Daisy is the host of ABC's "America's Funniest Videos," which airs Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m., ET.
Daisy is with us on the eve of AFV's $100,000 episode! Be sure to catch that tomorrow night at 8 p.m. on ABC. In
the meantime, we're going to spend the next 30 minutes chatting with Daisy!
ABC Amy:
Our first question.
Question:
Do you realize you are really hot to most teens, and is that a good thing or bad thing?
Daisy Fuentes: I did not realize that! If that's the case then I guess that's a good thing!
Question:
What is it like to be on TV, and have so many people watching you?
Daisy Fuentes: If I think about it a little bit too much it can be a little bit of a freaky thing, but
if I don't think about it can be really fun, and it can be really wonderful.
Question:
Who were your role models growing up? (Both Hispanic and non)
Daisy Fuentes: I didn't have many role models growing up. I didn't think I was aware of what a role model
was. Now that I know better, I have to say my parents.
Question:
What do you do to your hair that it always looks so healthy?
Daisy Fuentes: Major conditioning moisturizing! A good tip that I have is when you're going to spend a
day at the beach in the sun, pack it with a hydrating conditioner that has sunscreen and let the sun act as a heat
lamp on the conditioner.
Question:
Daisy, I was wondering if you are still modeling, and if so for whom?
Daisy Fuentes: Not as much as before. Usually, for special occasions, benefits or for friends.
Question:
What were your favorite things to do when you were a kid?
Daisy Fuentes: Watch TV! "Love Boat," "Fantasy Island" -- all of which are back! I
was big on roller-skating when I was a kid... I split my chin open that way.
Question:
What kind of connections did you have or need to get to be in this business?
Daisy Fuentes: None! I'm not one of those fortunate ones! I had no real connections, I started from the
bottom. Actually, the modeling helped a little, I made some connections through the modeling and started locally.
Question:
Were you born in Cuba?
Daisy Fuentes: Havana.
Question:
Daisy, do you still live in New Jersey?
Daisy Fuentes: Just sold my place there! That was my last contact with Jersey! So I'm in LA somewhat now
for work.
Question:
How often do you visit Miami & where do you hang out there?
Daisy Fuentes: I visit Miami whenever I get a few days free to catch up with family and friends. I like
to make dinner for friends at my parent's house or at my house, or charter a boat and spend the day out at sea
with friends. I also like to jet ski and spend a lot of time on the beach--and there are a
couple of good restaurants on the beach.
Question:
Will you do any acting?
Daisy Fuentes: Some... I've done some and I will probably do more. It's not a crazy passion of mine, but
it all kind of falls in together, I guess. If interesting projects come up, then that's good.
Question:
What is your favorite movie?
Daisy Fuentes: My favorite movie . . . hmmm . . . let me think. I have a few. "The Godfather,"
"Saturday Night Fever," "Grease" -- anything with John Travolta or Al Pacino in it. Oh, and
"History of the World, Part I."
ABC Amy:
Oh dear... Daisy's riffing on "History of the World" right now... too bad you can't hear her!
Question:
I am one of your fans...my cousin has a video of her daughter and it is a funny one...and I was wondering what
my chances were to get it on the show?
Daisy Fuentes: I'd say excellent! Send it!
ABC Amy:
You can get the address from ABC.com...Or watch AFV tomorrow night and copy it down!
Question:
Who did you have a crush on as a kid?
Daisy Fuentes: John Travolta. :) And the Hardy Boys. ;)
Question:
How did you come to be on TV? At what age did you start?
Daisy Fuentes: I started when I was about 19 or 20. And had I known that this was something that I could
really do, I would have started much earlier. I never thought it was a possibility.
Question:
As a Hispanic role model, what advice do you have for Hispanic Americans and non-Hispanics alike regarding bilingualism?
Do you feel it was a vital advantage?
Daisy Fuentes: Oh absolutely! There's nothing like speaking more than one language... I speak Spanish and
English and I'm now studying Italian. With languages it's like anything else, the more you know, the more your
life will be enriched.
Question:
I have been offered a modeling job. I have always wanted to be a model. To take this modeling job though, it would
require me to quit college. I am a freshman. Could you offer any advice? I am torn.
Daisy Fuentes: My advice would be to try to do both right now, until you're sure that your modeling jobs
will be more than just the one job. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do the two things until you're
just able to do the modeling. When your income from modeling is large enough, it might
be ok to quit college for awhile, but I believe, that when opportunity knocks you should open the door. Just make
sure it's worth it and that it's legit.
Question:
You met my mom last weekend at a restaurant and you sent her a note with your autograph to give to my brother.
He received it and was very happy. Thank you, you are a sweetheart!
Daisy Fuentes: If that was in Miami, I think I remember!
Question:
Hi Daisy! How do the producers actually pick the winning videos on AFV?
Daisy Fuentes: The audience picks the winner.
Question:
Will you be making any more appearances on MTV?
Daisy Fuentes: Maybe!
Question:
Do you watch the videos personally before the show?
Daisy Fuentes: Only the ones that I have to put a voice over on. I find that the spontaneity is better
because they truly crack me up and the producers like to get that reaction on tape.
Question:
Did you have to try out for your show?
Daisy Fuentes: No. :) It was an offer. :) I think after 10 years of proving myself in television I think
I should only deal with offers. I don't mean that to sound conceited ... but it's true!
Question:
What kind of guys do you like?
Daisy Fuentes: In guys I look for the same things that I look for in all people. A good heart, honesty,
fun, interesting people that have something to offer to humanity and it always helps that they have a great sense
of style and are good looking. But then again if you have a good heart, you're good
looking already, so... ;)
ABC Amy:
awwww : )
Question:
Hello Daisy, I watch you on AFV and I was wondering, why do you change your clothes all the time?
Daisy Fuentes: Because I can! :)
ABC Amy:
LOL!
Question:
In high school, did you participate in such extracurricular activities such as Student Government, Future Business
Leaders of America, etc.?
Daisy Fuentes: No. But I was Homecoming Queen! :)
ABC Amy:
You can't beat that!
Daisy Fuentes: I know it sounds callous but it was fun. :)
Question:
Daisy, are you doing a 1999 calendar?
Daisy Fuentes: No, but I'm considering a 2000. :)
Question:
Is living in the spotlight all it's cracked up to be?
Daisy Fuentes: No... nothing is ever what it seems. And there's a downside to everything. But, you gotta
take the good with the bad. Fortunately, there's more good than bad.
Question:
Do you have your own web site?
Daisy Fuentes: I'm working on it as we speak!
Expect to see it online ASAP. Meanwhile I recommend Hank's "I Dig Daisy" website. ;) It's just some guy...
I don't know who he is! :)
ABC Amy:
We'll check it out!
Question:
How tall are you, Daisy? And do you like shorter men? LOL!
Daisy Fuentes: I'm 5'10" and I like all men who are kind, gentlemen, and extremely respectful. :)
Question:
I have the Daisy Fuentes workout tape, I was wondering if you had any other weight loss tips?
Daisy Fuentes: Thanks for buying the tape, first of all, and I'm glad you enjoy it! I just discovered pilates...
and I think it's incredible. It's a great addition to my workout. It's difficult to explain because it's done with
some very strange machines and usually requires one on one training. Dancers do it a lot. It's really only caught
on so far in New York and LA. But keep your eyes open for it.
Question:
Daisy, do you have any brothers or sisters and if you do, what are their names?
Daisy Fuentes: I have a younger sister, Rosana. She's a hottie. :) She's 27.
Question:
How do you feel Latin celebs such as yourself influence American media? Do you know of any other up and coming
Latino/a talents?
Daisy Fuentes: There really should be a lot more by now. And I think that because we're not such a small
minority at all we definitely influence everything in this country. And we have to remember that we do have a voice
and we do count.
ABC Amy:
And we've got one final question. Daisy, what do you watch on TV now?
Daisy Fuentes: "America's Funniest Home Videos" -- Saturday nights at 8 on ABC!
ABC Amy:
Of course! What a silly question that was ; )
Daisy Fuentes: What did you think I would answer? ;)
